Text of 250 Post-cards sent by AGRA Watch supporters to Bill and Melinda Gates in August 2010:
Dear Bill and Melinda Gates,
I am concerned about your Foundation’s approach to agricultural development in Africa, and your support of the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA). Recent reports such as the IAASTD have shown that genetically modified or otherwise ‘improved’ varieties of seeds, fertilizers, chemical-intensive practices, privatization of seed, and further trade liberalization will not help the hungry. Contrary to your interest in eradicating hunger, an approach that incorporates these elements will increase farmer debt, enrich agribusiness corporations like Monsanto and Syngenta, degrade the environment, and dispossess small farmers.
I urge you to: Shift your funding priorities from industrial agriculture to socially and ecologically appropriate practices determined locally by African farmers and scientists; Cut all ties to Monsanto and the biotechnology industry, including their non-profit partners and their companies’ philanthropic entities; Stop lobbying for intellectual property rights frameworks that will further monopolize seed and deny farmers control over their harvest.
I will be following the work of AGRA closely and taking appropriate action in solidarity with small-scale African farmers.
