Food Movements Unite! Strategies to Transform Our Food Systems

In communities around the world the power of the people is at work regaining control of our ailing food systems. According to the latest book from Food First, the global food movement is diverse, widespread, refreshingly creative and tremendously powerful. Food Movements Unite! Strategies to Transform Our Food Systems brings us the words, insights and vision of the remarkable farmers, workers and consumers from rural and urban communities around the globe as they address the critical question:

How can we unite to transform the global food system?

The 21 activists and practitioners contributing to this work write “from the trenches” of the food, fuel and environmental crises have much to say about our food future and the potential of this unprecedented “movement of movements.” From the writings of Raj Patel, author of Stuffed and Starved and Olivier De Schutter, UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food, to João Pedro Stédile of the Brazilian Landless Worker’s Movement, this insightful book is a window into the thinking and actions of the people committed to bringing us affordable, healthy food in ways that harm neither the planet nor its people.

Speaker Biography

Eric Holt-Giménez, Executive Director FoodFirst/Institute for Food and Development Policy
Eric Holt-Giménez is the executive director of FoodFirst/Institute for Food and Development Policy. Eric is the editor of the 2011 Food First book, Food Movements Unite! Strategies to transform our food systems, and the author of the 2009 Food First Book Food Rebellions! Crisis and the Hunger for Justice. His earlier book, Campesino a Campesino: Voices from Latin America’s Farmer to Farmer Movement for Sustainable Agriculture chronicles the development of this movement in Mexico and Central America over two and a half decades. Eric worked with farmers, participated in their farmer-to-farmer trainings, and recorded their triumphs with his camera and pen. This engaging book is the product of that longitudinal participatory research.

“The technologies that are promoted by the Gates Foundation in Africa are not farmer-friendly or environmentally friendly. Some of them have not been tested fully to determine their effects on the environment and consumers. African farmers are seeking food sovereignty, not imposed unhealthy foods and GMOs!” – Samuel Nderitu
AGRA Watch welcomes Samuel as part of our effort to support African-initiated programs rooted in agroecological and indigenous farming practices, social equity, and food sovereignty. Samuel is visiting Seattle after receiving the Food Sovereignty Prize – Honorable Mention, awarded at the Community Food Security Coalition’s annual conference in Oakland, CA. AGRA Watch, a campaign of Community Alliance for Global Justice, nominated G-BIACK after visiting them in 2010 to learn more about the Gates Foundation-funded Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) and indigenous alternatives.
About G-BIACK: Samuel and his wife Peris are the founders of G-BIACK, Grow BioIntensive Agricultural Centre of Kenya. G-BIACK has trained thousands of small-scale farmers in agroecological methods in a region suffering from ongoing drought, high rates of HIV/AIDS, hunger and the effects of chemical-intensive agriculture. G-BIACK hosts a demonstration farm, community library, seed bank and classroom. They work with marginalized communities, including widows, people living with HIV/AIDS, orphans, women and poor farmers. G-BIACK’s programs empower communities to build food systems free from corporate control and rooted in self-determination, local knowledge and ecological sustainability. Learn more about G-BIACK on the web HERE, and watch this 12 minute video, “GROW”.
About The Food Sovereignty Prize: The Food Sovereignty Prize has been awarded annually at the Community Food Security Coalition Conference since 2009. The recipients of this prize have contributed significantly to the food sovereignty movement through grassroots action, raising awareness, and/or developing and implementing new programs and policies. Winners recognize the importance of collective action in bringing about social change; they clearly prioritize the leadership of women, indigenous peoples, people of color, migrant workers and other food providers marginalized by the global food system. CAGJ was honored to receive Honorable Mention in 2009.

Join us SAT Nov 12, 6 – 8PM
Edmunds St., Columbia City). Fair Trade for the Holidays items also available for sale!

…What is food justice? How would we define it? Is there a food justice movement?

When we talk about today’s food system, food injustices are ubiquitous. It’s where workers in the fields, the meat processing plants, or the restaurant industry face hazardous and exploitative conditions. It’s in the low-income neighborhoods that lack supermarkets but abound in fast food franchises. And it’s with our food products that sometimes resemble more of a high calorie chemical mash than a wholesome and healthy product. Opposing these unjust conditions, a food justice movement has taken root, seeking to transform the food system, from field to table. Robert Gottlieb, co-author of the new book, Food Justice, will talk about the strengths and the challenges facing these new and dynamic food justice groups and their organizing efforts, the emerging new politics around food, and the efforts to transform the very language and understanding about food, from how food is grown to why eating has become a political act.

Robert Gottlieb is Professor of Urban and Environmental Policy and Director of the Urban & Environmental Policy Institute at Occidental College. He is the author of a dozen books, including most recently Food Justice (with Anupama Joshi, MIT Press). He has been researching and organizing around food system issues for more than two decades and is a long-time social and environmental justice activist and historian of social movements.

March for Immigrant Rights! We’re All Workers! Washington-Arizona-Wisconsin: The Same Struggle!

12:30 – Meet at corner of 20th & Jackson! March leaves from St. Mary’s Church at 1pm. Call Heather at 206-724-2243 if you can’t find contingent.
1:00: March with the CAGJ banner to Memorial Stadium (401 5th Ave. Seattle, WA 98109).
Help make this year’s May Day march the biggest in years! CAGJ, WA Fair Trade Coalition and Witness for Peace NW will have a joint contingent in the May Day March, focused on making the connections between trade and immigration. NAFTA & CAFTA impoverish communities and displace farmers from their land, forcing them to migrate to the US in search of more secure livelihoods. For these reasons and more, CAGJ hopes you will join us this Sunday to help distribute leaflets in Spanish and English about the need to mobilize against pending US-Colombia, Panama and Korea Free Trade Agreements now!

Organized annually by El Comité Pro Reforma Migratoria y Justicia Social and the May 1st Action Coalition, this is one of the largest annual May Day and immigrant rights marches in the country! This year, as in others past, we continue to witness attacks against workers via budget cuts and against the basic right to organize collectively, the most visible of these attacks occurring in Wisconsin and throughout the Midwest. Likewise, ICE officials and state legislatures across the country continue an onslaught against undocumented workers and communities with absolute impunity. One such example was the recent drivers’ license bill in Olympia that was halted momentarily in early March.

The event will help promote the following demands from workers:

1. An immediate legalization of status for everyone
2. Respect to our immigrant communities and stopping repression
3. An immediate cease to the 287 (g), E-Verify Programs and Secure Communities Program
4. An immediate end of programs that break families apart, an end to dragnet raids and deportations en masse
5. An immediate end to subsidies for detention centers
6. The right to educational access for all students
7. Stop repression of trade unions and demand the freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining.

And continue to make the connections at CAGJ’s May Food Justice Project Meeting!

Tuesday May 17th 6:30-8:30pm
Connecting Food Justice, Food Sovereignty & Trade Justice
At CAGJ’s monthly Food Justice Project meeting we will focus on how trade agreements undermine farmers, food security and food sovereignty.
6:30 – 7:30 pm Facilitated discussion by Kristen Beifus, Director of Washington Fair Trade Coalition (WFTC)
7:30 – 8:30 pm Community Alliance for Global Justice’s Food Justice Project organizing meeting

Together we can impact the pending US-Colombia, Panama and Korea Free Trade Agreements! Location: New Hope Baptist Church in Central District: 116 21st Ave, Seattle 98122 (one block north of Yesler).
