Food, Farms & the Roots of Migration: Communities Cultivating Change, Sept 21 – Oct 1, 2011

Join Witness for Peace Northwest and Community Alliance for Global Justice in a special travel delegation focused on food sovereignty!

Travel to southern Mexico to explore the connections between U.S. policies and corporate practices that impact farming, food sovereignty, food availability and access, as well as immigration, across Mexico and US communities.

Oaxaca is a state in southern Mexico with one of the largest indigenous populations in the country.  Its immense cultural, geographic, and bio-diversity are contrasted with deepening poverty and the ever-increasing migration of Oaxacans to the US. It is also home to vibrant indigenous peoples’ and small farmers’ movements that are fighting for the right to save and grow their own seeds in the original birthplace of corn. Learn about the complexities of this state and the movements being formed to make a better world possible!

Meet with small farmers, indigenous groups, union leaders, Via Campesina affiliates & others struggling for justice and food sovereignty.

Learn how these communities and their daily lives are impacted by NAFTA and migration. Witness the many ways communities are successfully coming together to identify and face the challenges of food security while preserving environmental and cultural values. Discover connections to your own home community. Oaxacan family homestay included.

Take action! We provide action tools and informational materials to help you bring these experiences home.  Join like-minded volunteers in Witness for Peace NW and CAGJ to put what we learn into practice in the Northwest!

Cost: Approx. $1250 plus airfare (includes deposit all meals, accommodations, facilitation, translation, & transport in Mexico. Also covers an orientation/training session, extensive reading materials, & action tools).
